Discrimination between street heroin consumption and poppy seed ingestion represents a major toxicological challenge in daily routine work.

Now it is known the presence of acetylated thebaine metabolites ATM4 und ATM4 glucuronide (ATM4G) only originating from thebaine during heroin synthesis followed by metabolic reactions after administration. Therefore these substances allow as marker a clear differentiation between illegal heroin users and exposure to poppy seeds.
